Document Summary

More to do with social life, rather than humanity. Society culture symbol systems symbols. Ex: language (tool we use to communicate meaning to one another), facial expression, body behaviour, art, literature, music. Symbols (and their meaning): things that represent something else. Ex: treble clef- quarter note/b note, cross-christianity, shamrock-good luck/irish, mother- social status/social position, hijab-muslim, prayer beads-praying. Pictures of boys hugging dogs: they love their dogs, expressing affection, communicating love. Ikea comic strip: we understand the meaning- poking fun at ikea. 1)explanation: if meaning is specific to a society, then culture and society are closely related. In contrast to the humanities perspective: culture as universal ideals share by all societies, sociology: culture is influenced by social factors, link between culture and society. How do we explain this: functionalism: close fit between culture and society, societies have needs, social institutions meet those needs, society in a state of equilibrium, elements of society reflect each other, culture reflects society, society reflects culture.
