Max weber formal rationality = optimum means to an ends shaped by rules, regulations, and larger social structures. Weber argues that people have little choice in the means to an end because of the social structures and rules/regulations that govern our lives. Bureaucracy a model of formal rationality made of 4 elements: efficiency, predictability, calculability, non-human tech control. Mcdonaldization: coming to dominate more and more sectors of american society as well as the rest of the world the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are. For ritzer, this process extends to virtually every aspect of society: efficiency optimum method for getting from point a to point b. Workers emphasize quantitative aspects of their work if you can get something done quickly, means you"re good at your job. Expectation much work, quickly, low pay. Workers behave predictably get given scripts interactions are shaped by those rules.
