Challenges heterosexism : the idea that heterosexuality is natural, normal & superior, anything going against that, is out of the realm, privileged in society. Heterosexism marginalizes other forms of sexual identity & practice: punishes anything that is not understood with heterosexual activity. Questions the notion that sexuality is natural: given, born/programmed to be sexual, anyone that isn"t heterosexual should be punished, has to do with religion. Common sense assumption that sexuality is a biological instinct/drive. Theorists never thought about sexuality as organizing our society. Is sexuality natural: ideas about sexuality change over time & space, sexual practice is learned, sexual desire is multi-focal. Sexuality is understood & practiced differently in different historical & cultural contexts. Socially shaped & varies in practice across time, space & a single life. Social norms: what sex includes, when its appropriate. We think that when having sex, relates to marriage. Depends on your religion: with whom. Cannot have sex with a dead body.
