People have little choice in the means to an end: chose the same way getting through something. 4 elements: efficiency, predictability, calculability, control. Mcdonaldization: the process by which the principle of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of american society as well as the rest of the world . Education: university brochures, websites, testing/assessment, calculability, quantitative aspects of products sold & services offered, something you can attach a number to, quantity has become more equivalent to quality, workers emphasize quantitative aspects. Doesn"t allow a lot of variation: expectation much work, quickly, low pay, etc. Education: standard terms (hrs, wks, student #"s, grades (rather than quality of learning, gpa (grade point average), lsat, sat. Defines you & your future: university rankings, potential employers draw on these qualifications. Threat of being replaced buy technology: technological control over workers help mcdonaldized systems assure customers of consistency. Kindergarten as boot camp (authority, punctuality, etc. )
