The ultimate objective of laws in society, whether in democracies or dictatorships is social control. The goal of social control is the maintenance of social order. Consensus vs. con ict (perspectives on law: consensus perspective: Emphasizes social order, integration, stability and functionalism (ex social contract theory) Law is impartial and protects us equally. Law promotes public good, not private interest. Law is a neutral mechanism for con ict resolution among groups and individuals with divergent interests (this is helps to promote social integration) Laws ful l the human desire for security and survical. Laws are neither in uenced by nor re ect any economic, social and polotical interest: All the above summarized in the social contract theory.
