WRIT 1P06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Nerd, Dramatic Structure
Document Summary
Lecture 6: origin stories and superhero comics (continued) Note: climax = turning point in story, something shifts in character; falling action is outcome of climax. Exposition: introducing you to peter parker at school/home well-loved at home, but outsider at school because he"s into science, therefore not good at athletics, no flashy car, can"t get dates. He"s extremely bitter about community of teens he"s a part of (doesn"t like his community one day they"ll be sorry ) flawed superhero identity, even before he"s a superhero. Marvel allows us to be interested in human + superhero identity, bc human is also flawed. Important for reception, readership: especially at this point in 60"s, comic books weren"t taken seriously (read primarily by kids/teens) many of these people are outsiders, so they relate. Rising action: notion of accidental hero gains superhero identity by accident, usually because of radiation (because that was the in science thing at the time)
