Religious fundamentalism is characterized by a return to essential foundational principles, usually including a resistance to modernization and an emphasis on certainty through a literal interpretation of scripture. Christianity accepts what anthropology would call an evil spirit. Circa 1450 1650 ce was a time in which many people were accused, convicted, and executed as witches burned (punishment for heresy). Witches are believed to have made a pact with the devil.
