Lecture 4 - restoration: scientific revolution, archaeological restoration & viollet le duc (oct. 3) Heritage as unique and conservation as a particular culture. Question of original vs. copy: urges conservation of originals. Post french revolution: 1st statement of public interest on monuments and recognition of the need to safeguard and to restore. Quatreme de quincy (1755- 1849) : works of art belong in their cultural, architectural and geographical context + museums are the end of art". Pius vii concern: protect ancient monuments & initiate excavations in the hope of discovery more antiquities. New edict: impossible to set a price on an ancient monument - conserve in its original place. Sites are 1st archaeologically researched, scientifically studied and documented in detail. No innovation in shape and proportions - no creative operations. Note: this approach fails to recognize chronological, stylistic, constructive complexity of ancient monuments.
