Lecture 6 - memory and revitalization of a ruin, italian school (boito, beltrani), the modern cult of. Monuments (riegel), and scientific restoration (giovanoni) (oct. 17) Believed that building should never be left to die and supported stabilization as a preference over restoration (in between le duc and ruskin). Introduced eight principles many of which are practiced in modern conservation. Aims to restore monuments to a historical reality and each building should have a unique criteria for conservation. Continues and improves the theory of boito, classifies live/dead monuments and is the main editor of the athens charter: used to advise and influence conservation. Established three commemorative values: age, historical and intentional commemorative. Example of preserving a site"s value as a historic ruin with reversible stabilization techniques. Recovered valadier"s theories - combining an accurate and scientific approach. Stabilization based on a modern understanding of the building. Preservation of historical, spiritual and aesthetic values. Preferable to repair - repair is preferable to restore.
