Arth1101 the history of art: renaissance to the present. During and after the reign of louis xiv. Based on the old masters of the renaissance, clarity and order. But the art is baroque as well, but it"s different than the italian and other baroques. Development of a french classicism of the academy and louis xiv himself. This has become the official" portrait of louis xiv. Multiple fabrics shown, show off the wealth/riches of the king, shows off status. All symbols of ruler, great wealth, embodiment of the virtues of great rule (balance and justice) Sculptural relief of a lady allegory of justice (allegories are always female, grammatically their gender is female) The wig is a sign of vigorous, hale/hearty, like a lion"s mane a great symbol for ruler- ship. His gaze is looking directly at the viewer. Liked the portrait so much he kept the original and sent copies out.
