Material culture is the study through artifacts of the beliefs: values ideas attitudes and assumptions of a particular community or society at a given time. As a method you start by divesting yourself of any assumptions look at the artifact as if it were the rst time you see it. The materials, form, textual data, are what we start our analysis with. Gradually use the imperial data to collect possible beliefs that may be suggested by the sum of the parts. Situate in context (how are you making these deductions or reaching these conclusions?) An ordinary architecture to a speci c region. with reference to the rst lecture, vernacular architecture would be the bicycle shed. Dell upton describes changing de nitions of vernacular architecture, he de nes it as shorthand for vernacular architecture, cultural landscapes, and material cultures. What he argues in the paper is, those who study vernacular architecture, have already moved from what has been done.
