Historic painting dives in allegory, normally western, or ancient biblical stories which allude to present day. He is an international figure known for historical painting, radicalizing historical painting. Americans think of this as an american work because he was born in pennsylvania. His works were key models to other american painters. The art tried to teach a lesson through allegory, he learned about these concepts at a later point and was fascinated by it. Travelled to europe to study antiquity in more detail, a trip financed by a philadelphia man. He encountered several history painters and he settled in england. Depicting a contemporary event in contemporary address, almost photojournalistic.
