Arth1101 the history of art renaissance to the present. Up until now we"ve looked at fantasy (not reality) in neo-classical art. In the mid-19th century we are moving toward art that is about the here-and-now (what we are calling realism) Also talking about impressionism as a form of realism. Because impressionism is so popular it tends not to be discussed in realist terms. An art movement based on the belief that only the things of an artist"s own time and place including subjects previously considered too mundane or ugly for art are the proper subjects for art. Origins: 19th century continuation of the enlightenment belief that knowledge should be based on observation and direct experience, 1848 anti-authority revolutions that affected most european countries. They were inspired by the social + economic conditions that led karl marx and. Friedrich engels to publish the communist manifesto (1848), and by anger against authoritarian governments.
