ARTH 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Kinetic Art, Art Deco, Chrysler Building
Document Summary
Arth 1101 lecture 12 august 11th 2016. Relationship between artist and work of art becomes important. Though an image may seem abstract, we can understand the thoughts and ideas of an artist from their work. If art no longer has any stylistic requirements, then art is free, then technically one should not worry about the artist"s thoughts at all. Artists become obsessed with distancing themselves from meaning in their work, and move to pure randomness: this is art beyond the artist"s control. Kinetic art incorporated motion and randomness: e. g. Calder lobster trap and fish tail (1939) Mondrion broadway boogie woogie (1943: creates almost a flickering illusion, much smaller areas of colour than his usual work, inspired by his move to the usa during wwii. Van allen chrysler building (1928-30: america is prospering mass production of cars, telephone, etc, sunburst pattern near spire makes it look like it"s moving, made to look machine-like through chrome ornamentation, suggests speed and progress.
