Arth 1101 lecture 5 july 19th 2016. Change in france when louis xiv dies, linear painting was his preference (i. e. raphael), now that he"s gone, painterly painting takes over (i. e. titian) Baroque peaks 1620-1670, rococo is backlash to this. Rococo is not really a meaningful or powerful style, just a way for aristocrats to be visually pleased. Everything has a soft feeling of luxury, intellectually frivolous but effective at capturing the feel of aristocratic life. Boucher triumph of venus 1740: a painting about visual and sensory pleasure, a typical rococo. Fragonard the happy accidents of the swing 1767-68: shows a woman on a swing being pushed, her lover is able to peek up her skirt, there is excellent combination of light in the trees. This is the subject matter that preoccupies aristocrats interpersonal drama.
