BIOL 1103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Punnett Square, Zygosity, Scientific Method
Document Summary
Gregor mendel was the founder of genetics. Was the first to use the scientific method to study inheritance. A popular belief was hereditary traits blend evenly in offspring through mixing of parents" blood. Some traits don"t disappear in offspring and sometimes they have different traits that either of the parents. In 1866, mendel argued that parents give off to their offspring discrete heritable factors and that they retain their individuality generation after generation. A heritable feature in a flower would be the colour and it is called a character. The variant for the character can be the different colours it can have like purple or white flowers as their trait. True breeding varieties would be self fertilized plants same trait from generations. Cross pollination between parents, the offspring can have different varieties as hybrids. Crossing the two different characters is called a monohybrid cross. Offspring resulted in purple and white.
