Turkey vultures are obligate or full time scavengers. Makes for cleaner scavenging when sticking it into places. Huge raptorial bill to tear apart carcass. Carrion is detected by refined smell: enlarged nasal chamber filled with sensors of scent molecules, large part of brain dedicated to smell (olfactory) Huge nares (nostrils) not separated it goes through the beak. Communal roosts where lots of vultures sleep together so that not fed birds follow ones that have carcases somewhere in the morning so they can eat (information transfer) Lay eggs on dead fish so larvae then eats dead fish or snake. Predictable food shortages - food stress: mainly in winter - 1 hole for 1 acorn = scatter hoarding: when snow covers it they may have gps memory of where they hid them. Gray jays: mushrooms, insects, seeds, animal flesh: enlarged salivary glands to coat things they catch.
