Document Summary

Ectotherms use various methods to avoid freezing in sub-zero temperatures. They use methods such as hibernation an dormancy to avoid harsh temperatures. There are also many physical adaptations such as long legs on moose and snowshoe-like feet on snowshoe hare. Some animals are freeze tolerant (can survive while being frozen) we tend to see this in herps and painted turtle hatchlings. The hatchlings remain underground until the warmer weather approaches. The supercooling point refers to the point where an animal"s chemicals can no longer avoid freezing. Insects have glycerol to stop freezing along with cryoprotectant, this prevents death while insects are frozen and in some, prevents freezing altogether. Some animals use dormancy as a behavioural freeze defence in which they hide in hibernaculum"s for safety. Shivering is often used for thermal regulation as it heats the muscles. The american bullfrog digs below first layer of dirt to keep their warmth.
