Plants face a gauntlet of hungry mouths  All parts of plants are eaten by animals  When you see a plant defoliated you see seige lost  When you see a plant untouched, you see a battle won Physical Defences  Trees and other woody plants have externalARMOUR = bark  Some plants have sharp SPINES* (Scotch Thistle)  PricklyAsh has PRICKLES*  PRICKLES are epidermal outgrowths, like hairs  New buds resemble prickles = Automimicry  Hawthorns have THORNS*  Thorns are modified branches  Honey Locust  Do physical defences work?  Plant hairs are called TRICHOMES  Mullein leaves have TRICHOMES  Glandular  STINGING NETTLES  Glandular Trichomes; PHYSICAL + CHEMICAL defence
