Career: consists of a sequence of work-related positions occupied by a person throughout their life. Career success: vertical mobility/high earnings, psychological success: feeling of pride/personal accomplishment resulting from achieving important life goals. Constant training, retraining, job-hopping and career hopping will become the norm. Changing nature of jobs: change is affecting the very nature of how work is performed, jobs evolved over time (more breadth and depth) Initial choices about choosing a particular career, organization or job. Dependant on experienced others: advancement, employees become independent contributors concerned with getting and advancing their chosen careers. Trying to clarify long-term career options range: maintenance, leveling off and holding into career successes; dissatisfaction can lead to searching for alternatives/redirection of career efforts. Success can lead to continuing growth while failure can lead to early decline: withdrawal. Involves letting go of organizing attachment; major contribution is imparting knowledge/experience to others; satisfaction is feelings of fulfillment and willingness to leave.
