Document Summary
Strong identification with a state ( i. e a key component of one"s identity is the nation) Idea that one"s state is superior to others. The role that myths play in all conceptions of nation A concept first articulated by johann gorrfried von herder in the 1780s, in reference to germany. The volk are the common people that are the heart of the nation. Strong attachment to a specific land, a specific place. Common language, common customs, common traditions, common art forms, common mythology, all going back to antiquity. The notion of an ethnic nation centered on the volk became popular on the 19th century. Johann gottlieb von fichete urged germans to unite and embrace their shared language, culture and traditions. This was anti-revolutionary stance - a reaction against napoleon"s expansion, french republicanism, and the rise of secular civic nations (not organized around a specific religious framework) in which citizenship is based on civic rather ethnic ties.
