CGSC 2002 Lecture 18: Evolutionary Approach 2
Document Summary
Evolutionary cognitive scientists use different methods and measures to collect different forms of evidence. Let"s consider evolution of musicality as our example of different forms of evidence in evolutionary cognitive science. Schmitt, d. p. & pilcher, j. j. (2004). Since the definition of music can be easily stretched to include a large variety of sounds, including noise or even plain silence, it is more useful to define musicality. Musicality is a natural, spontaneously developing trait based on and constrained by our cognitive system, and music as a social and cultural construct based on that very musicality. Without musicality no music. (hankjan honing, 2012, p. Musicality consists of a set of abilities and mechanisms. Common candidates for fundamental musical skills are: Absolute pitch (ap) - the ability either to identify the chroma (pitch class) of a tone presented in isolation or to produce a specified pitch without external reference.
