Wood: at the design stage suitability of different construction materials are assessed, decision on which materials to use based on: experience, cost, availability, etc, important to understand capabilities & limitations of materials. Generally, catastrophic failures are caused by lack of understanding of the materials and their properties: knowledge of materials helps us to design, make an informed decision. Structure refers to the arrangement of the internal components of the material as seen on different levels of detail: Atomic level: arrangement of electrons within individual atoms and nuclei. Microstructure: consists of larger group of atoms and molecules that are normally agglomerated together. Macrostructure: structural features that can be observed with the naked eyes.
