Cults were not always the result of personal choices, sometimes participation was more of a reflection of social expectation. That is not to say that there was no choice in which cults you participated in. Parents had to choose to put their children forward to participate in particular cult. Citizens could choose whether or not to seek initiation into a cult or mysteries. Choose whether or not to make dedications. There are a few cults that seem to be completely elective in nature, especially those that were not strictly tied to polis religion. Individual spent the night sleeping in the sanctuary awaiting a dream from the asclepius. This cult developed in the 5th c. bc. Major centre was epidauros: other centres at kos, athens and pergamon. The sick individual would pray to the god and promise to make a gift to the deity when they were healed/cured.
