Topic 6: the growth of territorial states in the second quarter of the second millennium. 1807 bc c. 1595 bc sees absorption of city-states into larger entities. Period typified by individual men of extraordinary talents and will power: cobble together large expanses of territory their kingdoms rarely outlast them. Short-coming of large expanses of territory is that organizational dynamic remains that of a city-state and so not suited to governing large and diverse areas. Largely imposition of military will by military might: do not follow up with diplomatic activity, do not consolidate domains by integrating communities into a new whole. Image 2: map of hittites, upper mesopotamia + babylon. Most tablets contemporary with events come from places that are conquered/administered and not archives of the dominant powers.
