Document Summary

There is no policy for mandatory education of children, but nevertheless schools did exist. They placed special importance to grammar, how to speak properly, how to persuade. They didn t place as much importance on science and engineering like we do today. Parents were encouraged to teach their children pronunciation and how speak properly from a young age. Some masters even taught their slaves how to speak. The paedagogus was a kind of tutor that was assigned to children. Greek speaking slaves were often highly sought out so that they could be assigned as paedagogi. Grammatice is the first step of education (?) and the teacher was called grammaticus. People used to read aloud, the text was a guide to reciting. The idea of a silent reader, is a more modern idea. Next up, in the teenage years, the children began reading. The curriculum of back then was literary education.
