Born a small town outside of rome. Lawyer, philosopher politician in the 1st century bce. Famous for legal oratory: 24 speeches defending someone in court, at least 4 against an accused. Has a series of speeches against marcus antonius; to turn against him and make him the enemy of the state. Herodotus (greek author, 5th c. bce) on persian drinking. Wrote the only completely surviving latin novel: metamorphoses/golden ass. Wrote a speech as well > apology.
