Hercullaneum also covered: beter preserved by volcano mud rather than ash. Tabula peuingeriana-old rare map, sill marking the ruins of pompeii. Pliny the younger (nephew of pliny the elder: tried to save friends there, lots of people did escape on the water but many people also did not, pliny described the volcano. Now that type is itled a plinian . 1594- site of pompei inadvertently discovered when a farmer was digging an irrigaion channel.
