Document Summary
Individual religious expression does not often survive in the archaeological record, esp. Most of the overt religious expressions come from the elite. There was no formal religious service to mark the birth of a child- but it was not without ritual either. Father had to claim the child and decide that it should be reared on the 5th day after its birth. Then, child was carried around the hearth by parents (amphridoma) Five days after this event there was a party to celebrate its birth. Girls were temporary member of family then given away to husbands. Dowery were expensive as well, all girls had to have one. Father presented child to the members of his brotherhood (phratry) at the annual festival of the apatouria. Both male and female children could be presented. Apatouria was a state festival but each phratry celebrated amongst themselves.
