In order to keep track of their many gods, each greek poleis implemented a strict calendar of festivals and sacrifices. General agreement among all greeks for the dates of the panhellenic festivals. Within any given calendar, the dates of each festival were specifically outlines: ex. the great or city dionysia in athens began on the 10th day of the month elaphebolion. Demes had their own religious calendars and festivals. They generally incorporate the major festivals of the polis calendar. Demes sent representatives to larger polis festivals: ex. Festivals inscribed into the religious calendar of a polis were considered central to the piety of that polis. Demes given a portion of meat to take home. Ritual act of sacrifice and the distributions and consumption of the meat defined by set rules. Edible portions given to human, inedible portions given to gods as sacrifice. The division of the sacrificial animal in this way is described in hesiod"s theogony (535-537)
