Greeks and jews lived side by side from the hellenistic period onward, but they had contact long. Reactions to greek religions: christians and jews before this. Christians and greeks only coexisted from the 1st century ad onwards. At first, this co-existence was relatively peaceful. Pagan is a much later term used by christians to describe followers of traditional religions. Greeks were opposed to jewish and christian faith. Accused the jewish people of being expelled from egypt. Christans accused of claiming ancestry from jews but disobeying their tenets: ex. In response to criticisms against their own faith, christian and jews attack greek religion. Drew on philosophical debates of 4th and 3rd bs. Greeks already questioning morality and existence of olympian gods. Jewish philosopher living in alexandria in 1st c. ad. Argued that the wisdom found in greek philosophers ultimately derived from moses. Had little influence of jewish writers, but profoundly influenced later christian writers: esp. the christian philosopher justin.
