Lecture information: do not need to memorize timelines, there are different versions of the same myths, but we"ll follow the ones in the textbook. What is myth: still undefinable, mythos = greek for word, speech, story, tale. 4 categories of myth: true/proper myth, saga/legend stories with kernel of historical truth but has been embellished, folktales, fairy tales. Viking sagas, holy grail: may have a little bit of historical truth, but mostly made up. Ethereal nothing last, youth doesn"t last, etc. Fragmented episodes in life, no continuity. Absolute reality that never changes; stability. Timeless nothing within our space or time; a whole other world. Unified secure world that is predictable.
