Talking about KONY 2012…
This phenomenon represents how we live in a global world.
Look at the timeline. Within a few days, the activist group
Invisible Children made $5 million within a few days!
However, there was also a lot of backlash generated against the
video. There were allegations that the group only put up the
video to raise money to pay their members larger salaries.
KONY 2012 is an example of agenda setting, and also
represents how much power social media has to spread big
messages across the world.
Is new media and “globalization” all that it’s made out to be?
Because the barrier of physical distance, space and time has
been overcome, our ideas of globalization and of having a
constant, 24x7 stream of media and news have evolved.
The fact that the message has been transmitted at all (via
whatever media) is the important event, in comparison to the
actual content of the message. “The medium is the message” –
