Description
th Comm. 1101 – 15 Oct. lecture Corporates & Communications Target is the new Zellers in Canada – it has bought them over, and all the Zellers  stores will soon become Targets. They give every customer a personal guest ID code and keep track of all your  purchases, returns/exchanges, payment methods etc. as well as some other info (see  slide). They make a “profile” on each customer.  Target also works with other companies to purchase more info about you. They get  them from places like the magazine houses you subscribe to, Facebook etc. They  justify it by saying that although it benefits them; it also benefits you…they say they  are able to send you coupons and info about products they believe you may be  interested in.  At moments when you’re most vulnerable or at times of major changes in your life  (pregnancy, marriage, college etc.), Target knows what’s happening and takes  advantage of the change in your shopping habits. They once took Temple U students for a midnight shopping spree (see slide). Consumer Society •  Capitalism is the main economic structu  – so many goods are produced,  companies have to create demand for them.  •  Choice, or the illusion of cho  – for example, choos
