COMM 2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Qualitative Research, Ethnography
Document Summary
Okay, so today we are drilling down a little bit into the nature of qualitative research. Last week we were looking at research methods in totality qualitative and quantitative and the ways in which they approach the theory and which method is most useful and the best way to get the answers to your research questions. So qualitative designs are usually more associated with the ideas of getting deeper meaning whereas quantitative is more associated with measuring certain behaviors, ideas or attitudes. In fact, research does not need to necessarily choose between the two in fact it is a very symbiotic relationship. So just to repeat the features of qualitative research. We are using an inductive approach, so we are interested in observing the social phenomena around us at any or all of these relationships and interpreting it. Interpretivist epistemological approach: figure out a way to see the world from the subject"s point of view.
