Qualitative Research Methods Features of qualitative research ­ Inductive relationship between theory and research o We are going through the process of conducting the research before  connecting it to literature o As we come up with conclusions, we connect what we have learned to  theoretical positions that exist… and try to rationalize these ­ Interpretivist epistemology o Rather than scientific experimentation, and see the world from the  subject’s point of view ­ Constructionist ontology ­ Emphasis on words vs. numbers ­ Emphasis on shining intense light on a subject vs. generalizing t to a population ­ Researcher plays a role in the research The main Preoccupations of qualitative researchers ­ Seeing through the eyes of the individual who is being study o Taking on a role and being open to unexpected findings ­ Description and emphasis on context ­ Emphasis on social processes ­ Flexibility and limited structure ­ Concepts and theory emerge from the data that is extracted Research methods used in Qualitative Research methods ­ Textual analysis o Can be applied to any text (TV, song lyrics, advertising, can be visual  forms too) ­ Ethnography/participation observation o Prolonged immersion in the field ­ Interviewing o In depth, semi, or unstructured o Individual or focus groups o Could change your view on things when someone tells you their  perspective (the presence of a group can create meaning) The Main steps in qualitative research ­ General Research questions ­ Selecting relevant sites and subjects o Relevant as in studying presidents, but not all presidents are alive (cannot  do interview) so you use textual analysis and look at speeches and  interviews ­ Collection of relevant data ­ Interpretation of data ­ Conceptual and theoretical work o Tight specification of research questions o Collection of further data Concepts in qualitative research ­ Definitive concepts (quantitative resea
