The focus is to analyze critical aspects in relation to media and communication. Mainstream media are large media companies who have extended influence and big audiences. They direct conversation by being selective of wording and stories that are shown. Mainstream media includes news media, entertainment media, and many other forms. The media are systems of power and mainstream media is institutionalized. They are institutionalized because they are embedded in our political, social, cultural, and economic life. The media tends to be owned by elites and influences how people interact with one-another through teaching/ showing the dominant culture (cultural hegemony). Hegemony refers to the condition in which a fundamental class exercises a political, intellectual, and moral role of leadership.
