COMS 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Information Privacy, Michel Foucault, Sousveillance
Document Summary
Privacy is now about what companies are doing with our information, not how it is protected. Privacy can be seen as a common/ public good in society (it is seen as a value and a human right which brings law into the equation). Because it is seen as a human right the concept of informational privacy is introduced (protection against personal information being shared on a large scale). There are three types of privacy: bodily privacy (privacy of the body/ images), territorial privacy (protection/ privacy granted in your own environment ie in your home). Informational privacy (protection of private information ie credit card data, name etc). There was a drastic change in the 19th century due to the introduction of digital images. These images could easily be shared through mass media, due to this people developed a fear of their images being circulated without their consent.
