COMS 2003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Gustave Le Bon, Herd Mentality, Consumerism
Document Summary
What is it about communication that lends itself to application using philosophers and their schools of thought? (marxists, freudians, etc. ) New ways of grouping people (masses, crowds, citizens) New groupings reflected by the emergence of mass media . New problems about how to live together. Two of the most powerful critics and witnesses of modernity are karl marx and sigmund. Marx sees external factors as to what affects us while freud sees internal factors as to what affects us. After all the transformations, people started wondering what would happen to society. Gustave le bon saw the problem in all the new tech advances and new cities with new citizen rights. People behave differently when they are part of a group as opposed to them by themselves . Le bon says the crowd exhibits a form of psychological characteristics. This is an early example of mass society theory.
