Criminology is a mixture of different disciplines, different objects of study and some dispute over where, precisely, its boundaries actually lie and should lie. Criminology has origins in applied medio-legal science, physchiatry, a scientifically oriented psychology and in nineteenth century social reform movements. The term criminology was first used by paul topinard, a frenchman studying the body types of criminals. An italian scholar, cesare lombroso in various forms was, was concerned with attaempts to identify physical and other characteristics that set criminals apart. (head shape, jaw size). Garland named a stream of work after him because he belives that one very important stream of criminology must be concerned with identyfing the individual, social and environmental factors that are associated with offending. Thortsen sellin, an american criminologist writing in the 1930"s argued that the criminologist does not exist who is an expert in all the disciplines which converge in the study of crime.
