Significance of becker"s outsiders and his labeling theory. Groups with greater power label them as so. Once a person is labelled, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Outsider label: someone who is constantly breaking norm. Person who is labelled as outsider might see dominant group as outsider. It takes as status quo what is right and just. Variety of groups with competing norms and groups. This is what creates what is deviant and who is. A lot of variance on deviance depending on time and place. Typical people who make rules: older generations, those with economic and political power. Rather than deviant motives leading to deviant behaviour, becker argued opposite. People use marijuana not because they are addicted but because they derive pleasure. Connection with marijuana users came from jazz scene.
