CRCJ 4002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Risk Society, Late Modernity, Eugenics
Document Summary
Society endangers itself and is self-conscious about it. Late modernity: modern society that is concerned with managing own risks/problems. Self referential society, closed society which there is nothing external to it. Risk society less preoccupied with production of good then prevention of bad things. Analysis of risk can use foucault, but mostly use strategies of prevention and pre-emption. For risks to exist, they need to be established scientifically. Science that can calculate, compute, produce quantified assessment. World risk society, politics needs to show it is still in control even it is not. Crime becomes politicized when government cannot control other aspects. Tough on crime can reaffirm sovereignty over people. Legitimate totalitarian prevention: efforts to prevent something is the de facto standard now. Concern for events that have not yet happened. Classic model of psychiatry is that individual is dangerous also that dangerousness is a potential. Now we don"t need signs of danger to intervene on people.
