Concept 1: the study of disabilities must be social. Much like gender and race encompasses much more than chromosomes and skin colour disability is much more than a physical impairment. This way of thinking reflects the values and opinions of the social model of disability. Disability is not an attribute of an individual, but rather a complex collection of conditions, many of wbicb are created by the social environment. Concept 2: the study of disabilities must be foundational. The study of disability is at the foundation of our understanding of the social construction of race, gender, class etc. In other words, much like these other traits Disability is a way for us to differentiate ourselves from one another. Disability is essential to how we see ourselves or one another as same or different. Disability and the concept of disability is must be part of the very foundation in explaining what is different as well as what is normal.
