Lecture 3: war and technology: georg wust: 1925. Meteor expedition it was a german research vessel. It crossed the atlantic and was on the sea for 2 years. He used an echo sounder: which is the most important oceanography invention. *he was the first to use the echo sounder to study depth and topography of the sea floor. Waves are sent down to the ocean floor and then bounce back to the ship so information can be collected. The echo sounder allowed them to map the topography of the ocean floor. *main contribution is using the echo sounder to map ocean floor. Post wwii: technology applied to oceanography: hms challenger ii: 1951. Echo sounding atlantic, pacific, indian oceans and mediterranean sea. Challenger deep: deepest part of the deepest trench in the ocean: us nuclear submarine nautilus: 1958. From point barrow, alaska to the norwegian sea: submersibles manned and remote.
