Watching movies helps writing fiction and poetry. When writing for the screen you are writing in images. Example of a screenplay- chinatown by robert towne. According to syd field, it is not a novel and it is not a stage-play. Novel takes place inside of people (thoughts of characters) and short stories. Screenplay is very external, still want to know how people think but that information is given to us externally (images, behaviour and the way they speak), can edit mistakes. Stage- how people speak is important, actors are aware of the audience, live, things can change, limited-set, plays happen in real time, they are organic (sarah. The screenwriter"s job is to write in images and show emotion, action, character development. Don"t have to say hey i"m lost - can just ask for directions. Images are only one part of the screenplay. Dialogue and action are also a great way to show and provide information to move the story forward.
