Provide native speakers with usages, spellings, histories, etc. of general terms. Oxford english dictionary (oed) has most lexemes (headwords)- over. Lesson 2: the dictionary as an idea machine. Dictionaries can be used for creativity- helps you come up with new words. Everyone"s ideas emerge out of common word-stock- how we manipulate them makes the difference. Quotation blocks help you trace word back to early usage. Polysemy- capacity for word to possess multiple meanings at same moment in time. Semantic change- capacity of word to evolve from original usage. Word- radiates current different meanings and echoes past meanings, can access both in a dictionary. Etymology- origins of word, found right under pronounciation.
