Albert chinualumagu achebe was born in ogidi, anambra in nigeria to missionary parents who raised him protestant but retained many ibo traditions. Originally composed of organized kingdoms and states rule by various ethnic groups. 17th and 18th centuries saw european businesses established in the delta area of the niger river. Scramble for africa in the 19th century among european imperial powers. Internal religious, political, and ethnic problems ensued and led to civil war, resulting in countless deaths. Ibo, the tribe in the novel, returned to eastern nigeria and attempted to secede as their own nation, biafra, but they failed. Producer of much of world"s crude oil. African classic; one of the finest novels written about africa (world"s most widely read african novel) 8 million copies sold; translated into 50 languages. Times list of 100 great books of all times. Story of pre-colonial nigeria and the colonial encounter that would change entire lives and cultures of their people.
