Document Summary

Was involved in parliament before becoming a minister in a church in the country (late in life like donne) Herbert uses vocabulary of people today; simple poems. Herbert has prose written at a allegorical level. Experimental with the form of the poem: interplay between he content and the shape. 4 quatrains then couplet: the nal couplet has a thematic break; very dramatic. Usually sonnets are addressed to someone: here we have someone telling a short story. He seeks his (land)lord out to get a better lease deal: he seeks god out as he is unsatis ed with their relationship. The title gives us a clue that the poem is about more than a rental agreement. The speaker recognizes that he needs grace: can be the rst step toward god; recognizing that you need him. Line 4: controversy between the old testament and the new testament. Talks about going to heaven in a mundane everyday type of language.
