ENST 2500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Natural Hazard, Land Degradation, Exogeny
Document Summary
Natural hazard: a natural hazard is any geologic/geomorphologic process/event which has an adverse socio-economic or life-threatening impact on humans, come in all shapes and sizes. Hurricane katrina: lead to social economic problems, financial loss, price of oil went up, lead to anarchy. Nile river: signs of healthy vegetation, river flooding naturally replenishes nutrients. Hurricane sandy: bringing new life to a long-polluted ecosystem, prior to the hurricane, it was getting more polluted. Ex. volcanic eruptions: creating land, which then can be populated by animals, plants, etc and ash is mineral rich and nutritious and agriculture is benefitted, hence local economy is benefitted. Fire everywhere, mostly in the boreal forest: figure 1. 5 and 1. 6. The frequency of natural hazards appears to have increased since approx. Why: global reporting has increased, global population has doubled since 1960. Therefore greater impact on humans: population density increases.
