Internal load dominated buildings: majority of energy is used for equipment, lighing and process loads. Mild climate or low surface area to volume raio minimizes heat transfer through the envelope and minimizes heaing/cooling loads. Envelope load dominated buildings: internal loads are insigniicant compared to heaing and cooling loads cause by high heat transfer through the envelope. Convenional design process: involves team members only when essenial, less ime collaboraing, decisions made by fewer people, linear process, systems oten considered in isolaion, emphasis on up front costs, inished when construcion complete. Integrated design process: inclusive from the outset, ime and energy invested early, team inluences decisions, iteraive process, whole systems thinking, life-cycle cosing, process coninues post-occupancy: massing orientaion, envelope design, daylighing, hvac, renewables. 4 pillars of solar energy harvesing: quanity, comfort, timing, form. Solar conversion eiciency = useful energy/incident solar energy. Climate: long term trends of typical weather condiions.
